For his daily commute, Robert Weeks drops his teenage son off at school, parks the car, and bikes to his job with DesignHammer Media Group in southern Durham. Round trip, it's a 17-mile ride, including a stretch of the Greenway on the American Tobacco Trail. That's where he took this month's winning photo, near the two-mile mark on the trail.
Weeks, who lives in Bahama, NC, has been a bicycle commuter since 2005. He also rides on the Neuse River Greenway, a stretch of the East Coast Greenway east of Raleigh. Last year he totaled 5,000 miles, and "most of that was on the greenways."
Cycling is a Weeks family affair. "My oldest son enjoys road riding with me, and we've just added mountain biking to the mix this year. My wife and younger son prefer to stick to the greenways."
