From our executive director: Southeast region unites for greenways

2017 greenway web 018
The East Coast Greenway travels through the campus of the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, N.C., as it makes its way from Maine to Florida.

Our dreams came true when our first-ever Southeast Greenways & Trails Summit energized over 300 people from all over the region and far beyond—from Colorado and Washington to Pennsylvania and New York. The speakers were inspiring and informative, giving us all the strength to fan back out into our diverse urban and rural communities to transform transportation and raise the quality of life.

Leaders from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper's office and regional leaders including Durham's Mayor Bill Bell and Wake County's Board of Commissioners Chair Sig Hutchinson wowed people from out of town with their commitment and achievements from the last few decades. Supporters including Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, REI, the Triangle Community Foundation, GSK, the William Penn Foundation, NC DOT, Alta Planning+Design, and many others played key roles in the Summit's success.

We were honored to convene such an energizing and inspiring gathering. We'll play a similar role in New England this coming spring, April 26-27 in Boston. We hope that these summits will spur a new wave in Greenway development that provides safe and accessible corridors for millions more people to bike, walk, and run in their everyday lives. It's exciting to see the Summit and all of our River Relay programs building deeper and broader community throughout the Seaboard.

Onward to a sustainable and healthy future,

Dennis
