Longtime bicycling advocate Andy Clarke, director of strategy with Toole Design Group, has joined the East Coast Greenway Alliance Board of Trustees. Effective January 1, 2018, Clarke is serving a three-year term on the board, which is responsible for governance, fiscal oversight, and financial development of the 26-year-old nonprofit.

The East Coast Greenway is the country’s longest connected biking and walking route, traveling through 15 states and 450 cities and towns from Maine to Florida. To date, 900 of the route’s 3,000 miles are on protected, traffic-free paths. The East Coast Greenway Alliance works with federal and regional officials, state committees, local officials and legions of dedicated volunteers to bring the Greenway vision to life.

“What I love about the East Coast Greenway is that it’s both visionary and totally practical, aspirational and very hands-on,” says Clarke. “And I think that’s why it attracts a special kind of volunteer and supporter in the communities through which it passes. Like many of them, I am inspired by the idea of a 3,000-mile greenway, and I want the opportunity to ride my bike on it today to get to and from work. I am honored to be able to join the board and hope I can contribute to achieve this vision sooner rather than later.“

Clarke’s career spans three decades in national and international bicycle and pedestrian policy, planning, and program experience, including 12 years as president of the League of American Bicyclists. He joined the league in 2003 to establish and implement the Bicycle Friendly Community program, then took over as CEO in 2004. He also served five years as executive director of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals, where he wrote groundbreaking case studies and reports for the Federal Highway Administration. Over the past 20 years, Clarke has been involved in major national bicycling and walking policy and planning development, including the formation of the National Complete Streets Coalition and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, multiple federal transportation funding bills, and Vision Zero.

Clarke is one of four keynote speakers (along with Brent Buice,  South Carolina/Georgia coordinator for the East Coast Greenway) at the Southeast Biking Symposium March 22-24 in Hilton Head. Clarke is also presenting at the Greenway’s New England Bike-Walk Summit  in Boston April 26-27.

“We are thrilled to welcome Andy to our board,” says Dennis Markatos-Soriano, executive director of the Alliance. “His deep experience and broad perspective will be invaluable as we plan for continued bold growth of our organization and the Greenway.”
