Honoring longtime New York City bicycle advocate Roger Herz, the Roger Herz Greenway and Active Mobility Award will be presented at the HI New York City Hostel Ballroom, the site of the East Coast Greenway founding in 1991. The award will honor an individual for their outstanding contributions to promoting sustainable transportation and active mobility in New York City.
EdMundo Martinez, a veteran micromobility and active transportation advocate from The Bronx, New York, is the recipient of the East Coast Greenway Alliance’s first Roger Herz Greenway and Active Mobility Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to promoting sustainable transportation and active mobility.
Described as “a community builder and connector,” Martinez is a lifelong resident of The Bronx who plays an active role in advocating for and leading activities in Concrete Plant Park, a vibrant public park on the Bronx River Greenway and the East Coast Greenway.
"Herz bought his first bicycle during the transit strike of 1966 and commuted by bike for decades. He was one of the original five co-founders of Transportation Alternatives in 1973 — and he stuck with bicycle activism even as the others moved on. His focus was apparent from the names of the two letterheads he used for most correspondence: “To Improve Municipal Efficiency” (TIME) and “Bicycle Transportation Action.”
