New York, NY: East Coast Greenway Alliance 5-Island Tour

manhattan

Sunday, October 15, 2017 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

NOTE: This ride is in PLACE OF the Hudson Loop Ride which has been cancelled due to a last minute closure of the south bike path on the George Washington Bridge. The north path alternative was judged too dangerous and difficult with 6 dangerous staircases.

Join us for a 26-mile loop bicycle ride on the East Coast Greenway from Pier 84 in Manhattan along the Hudson River Greenway north to the NEW 151st Street Bridge to Riverside Drive, then east on 158th and over the High Bridge to the South Bronx.

We will ride the bike paths in the South Bronx and then over the new Randall's Island Connector. Then we'll stop for a break and possible eats at the Randall's Island main concession stand, circle Randall's and Ward's islands, then continue onto the RFK Bridge and into Queens. We will tour the lovely Astoria Park and several pocket parks in Queens, before crossing the Roosevelt Island Bridge. We'll stop for a photo opp at the north end lighthouse, and then go to the south end and visit the just opened Cornell Campus, before stopping at Four Freedoms Park in the South End.

Those wishing to return to the starting point can take the tram with me and we will ride from there down Manhattan's newest bike lane on Second Avenue to 55th, and then take the crosstown bike lane to the West Side Greenway again and return to 43 and West Side Greenway.

Alternatively you can catch the F train on Roosevelt Island or cycle the Roosevelt Island Bridge to Queens. Or, from the new Roosevelt Island Ferry Terminal (near the R. I. Tram stop), catch the new Astoria ferry service that shuttles on the East River between Astoria and Wall Street.

Need to rent a bike? Our start location is at Blazing Saddles, which rents bikes. They open at 9AM.

* Each rider is responsible for the cost of their transportation back to Manhattan.

We usually ride rain or shine but if the weather is particularly unpleasant, you will receive a cancellation email at 7 AM on the day of the ride.

Cost: A $20 donation to join this ride provides a reduced-cost first-year membership to the East Coast Greenway Alliance. This tax-deductible donation supports our mission to create a 3,000-mile trail from Maine to Florida. The ride is free for East Coast Greenway Alliance members.
