Celebrating three remarkable Greenway journeys

The East Coast Greenway Alliance team loves meeting the people who bring the spirit of the Greenway to life. This spring, we had the opportunity to connect with and learn from three unique and meaningful long-distance rides on the Greenway.

Inspired by these rides and interested in planning your own? Learn more from our Explore the Greenway resources. Consider starting by enjoying one of our most complete long-distance sections in North Carolina or Southern New England. And drop us a line at [email protected] to share your plans with us. We can’t wait to see you on the trail!

Cycle Hope: Miami to Provincetown

From Miami to Provincetown, Massachusetts, sisters Denise (the former Penn State women’s golf coach) and Barb St. Pierre recently completed an incredible 2,300-mile journey along the East Coast Greenway route, riding from April 10-May 29 and raising more than $30,000 for the East Coast Greenway and Third Act, a group mobilizing people over the age of 60 to take bold action on climate and democracy.

Their Cycle Hope ride was about more than the miles. It was about community, connection and building a more sustainable future. Throughout the trip, they organized several “Cycle Stops,” often at local craft breweries, to connect with communities along the Greenway. They aimed to “inspire civic engagement that empowers collective action,” while also raising awareness and support for the Greenway and Third Act.

Congratulations, Denise and Barb, and thank you for reminding us what makes the Greenway so special: people coming together to create something bigger than themselves.

UK Couple Completes Entire Greenway

Bec and Gaz Wilkes are returning home to England with 3,246 miles of stories to tell. The couple recently completed a north-bound through-ride of the East Coast Greenway from Key West to Calais, Maine, from April 3-May 27.

The ride was a celebration of Bec’s 50th birthday and a fundraiser for the Black Country Food Bank and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. While Bec and Gaz were on the Greenway, the local community kept Bec’s local coffee shop, The Drip Coffee Company, up and running. Gaz runs a bike repair shop, The Wollaston Hub, in the same building in Stourbridge, England.

Throughout their ride, they soaked in not just the miles, but the incredible support of the Greenway community.

Wheels of Grit: Key West to Kittery

U.S. Coast Guard veteran Jodie Knox of Washington, D.C., completed a Florida-to-Maine East Coast Greenway ride covering 2,156 miles from Key West to Kittery, Maine, from April 9 to May 20. Jodie’s inspirational ride raised more than $25,000 in support of the Wounded Warrior Project and Achilles International (Freedom Program), organizations changing lives for disabled veterans and their families.

Dubbed Wheels of Grit, Jodie’s ride was “built around forward motion, not speed. The route follows bike-friendly paths, rail trails and coastal roads, with daily stops in local communities, including visits to veteran organizations along the way. Every mile represents a choice: to keep moving, to adapt and to take the next step forward.”

Thank you, Jodie, for sharing your inspirational journey with the East Coast Greenway.
