Eastern Trail
Why This Is A Priority
The Eastern Trail connects the New Hampshire border to Portland, Maine’s largest city. The Eastern Trail is an existing system of trail segments and on-road routing, as well as a vision for safe, off-road multi-use trail connectivity between Portland and Kittery, Maine. Several gaps need to be filled to create a safe, connected corridor from Massachusetts and New Hampshire, all the way to Portland.

About the Eastern Trail
The Eastern Trail has 23 off-road miles from Bug Light in South Portland to Kennebunk (the East Coast Greenway uses just over 20 of them), as well as a scenic on-road route that mostly follows quiet country roads. Experienced bike riders and hikers can enjoy a beautiful journey from South Portland’s Bug Light Park on Casco Bay (near Portland) to Kittery’s Piscataqua River. The Eastern Trail continues to build recognition and popularity, both locally and nationally. In 2022, the trail was inducted into the Rail-Trail Conservancy’s national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame.
