Border to Boston Trail

Border to Boston Map

Why This Is A Priority

The Border to Boston Trail is a partially complete and envisioned 70-mile segment of the East Coast Greenway that will link 20 communities from Boston north to the New Hampshire border.

Completed Segments

Trail segments in Salisbury; parts of Newburyport, Topsfield, Danvers, Peabody, and Salem; sections of Marblehead, Swampscott, and Lynn; and the full routes through Malden and Everett are complete.

Peabody in Design

Several segments of the Peabody Independence Greenway are in design and expected to advance towards construction soon.

Planning

A feasibility study for a trail segment from Byfield in Newbury, north to Newburyport will be kicking off in 2026.

Northern Strand Construction

Construction is expected to be completed on Lynn’s Cycletrack — finishing the Northern Strand Trail — in the coming years.

About the Border to Boston Trail

The Border to Boston Trail is a critical link between nearly complete existing trail systems through Boston headed west along the East Coast Greenway spine route to the rapidly expanding New Hampshire Seacoast Greenway to the north. The Border to Boston Trail is nearly halfway complete, with many of the remaining segments in advanced stages of design.
