Ashley River Crossing rendering

Why This Is A Priority

A $100 million investment in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, the Ashley River Crossing will link the downtown Charleston peninsula with the West Ashley Greenway, eliminating one of the most dangerous bridge crossings on the entire East Coast Greenway route and creating a nearly continuous, 30-mile trail segment through Charleston County.

A Historic Need

1896: the South Carolina division of the League of American Wheelman (now the League of American Bicyclists) began an ultimately successful campaign to improve bicycle access over the Ashley River.

Pilot Lanes

2016-2017: City of Charleston pilots lane conversion for bike/ped on existing bridge. Charleston County Council subsequently rescinds support ending the pilot.

Federal Funding Secured

2019: City of Charleston awarded $18 million U.S. DOT BUILD grant for construction of standalone bike/ped bridge, the culmination of a tireless advocacy campaign led by Charleston Moves.

Construction Underway

2025: Construction begins after delays due to supply chain issues and budget shortfalls. The bridge is estimated to be completed by summer 2027.

About the Ashley River Crossing

The Ashley River Crossing project is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that will connect West Ashley and downtown Charleston. The bridge will provide a safe connection between the West Ashley Greenway, Brittlebank Park and the Ashley River Walk.

Almost half of the City’s population resides in West Ashley, yet there is no safe pedestrian or bicycle connection between West Ashley and the peninsula. The introduction of the Ashley River Crossing unlocks miles of existing and future multi-use and trail systems increasing access to jobs, schools, and other amenities for area residents and visitors.

More than 4,500 residents and 613 area businesses are located within a quarter mile of these resources and more than 73,000 jobs are within a 20-minute bike ride to the bridge. By connecting these areas to downtown, we expand access to recreational, economic and community opportunities across the region.
