Roger Herz Greenway and Active Mobility Award

Honoring longtime New York City bicycle advocate Roger Herz (center), the Roger Herz Greenway and Active Mobility Award recognizes an individual for their outstanding contributions to promoting sustainable transportation and active mobility along the East Coast Greenway. Nomination Information

Nominations are now closed for the second-annual Roger Herz Greenway and Active Mobility Award, honoring the legacy of longtime New York City bicycle advocate Roger Herz.

Announced in September, the 2025 award honors individuals who have made a meaningful and lasting impact on greenway and active transportation efforts along New Jersey’s segment of the East Coast Greenway, which spans from Fort Lee to Camden and connects countless communities in between.

The recipients were honored with a $1,000 cash award.

Process for and criteria selecting the winner:

  • East Coast Greenway Alliance staff will review and evaluate all nominations with a focus on the key achievements and impact on the community.

Criteria for selecting the winner:

  • Significant Impact: Demonstrated a significant impact on greenways and/or active mobility along the East Coast Greenway in New Jersey
  • Contributions: Specific contributions to advancing greenways and active mobility
  • Key Achievements: Notable achievements in the field of greenways and active mobility
  • Community Impact: Positive impact on the community through their efforts
  • References: supporting the nominee’s contributions and impact

Award Winners

2025: Eleanor Horne & Becky Taylor

Eleanor Horne and Becky Taylor, the visionary co-founders of New Jersey’s Lawrence Hopewell Trail, are the recipients of the East Coast Greenway Alliance’s second-annual Roger Herz Greenway and Active Mobility Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to promoting sustainable transportation and active mobility.

The 20-mile Lawrence Hopewell Trail, one of New Jersey’s premier trails for walking, running and biking, exists because of the hard work and dedication of Horne and Taylor. Together, they garnered the support of more than 20 public, private and nonprofit organizations to make this transformational trail a reality.

2024: EdMundo Martinez

EdMundo Martinez, a veteran micromobility and active transportation advocate from The Bronx, New York, was the recipient of the East Coast Greenway Alliance’s first Roger Herz Greenway and Active Mobility Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to promoting sustainable transportation and active mobility.

Described as “a community builder and connector,” Martinez is a lifelong resident of The Bronx who plays an active role in advocating for and leading activities in Concrete Plant Park, a vibrant public park on the Bronx River Greenway and the East Coast Greenway.

“Herz bought his first bicycle during the transit strike of 1966 and commuted by bike for decades. He was one of the original five co-founders of Transportation Alternatives in 1973 — and he stuck with bicycle activism even as the others moved on. His focus was apparent from the names of the two letterheads he used for most correspondence: “To Improve Municipal Efficiency” (TIME) and “Bicycle Transportation Action.”
