A lifelong bicycle commuter who has lived and ridden in communities across the East Coast, Kean McDermott joined the East Coast Greenway Alliance in September as its Northern New England Manager.

Currently based in Dover, New Hampshire, McDermott carries region-wide responsibilities for all aspects of Greenway development, advocacy and state committee and partner engagement. He supports communities along the route in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts as they plan, build and maintain sections of the Greenway.

“I am thrilled to join this dynamic team dedicated to the vision of completing the East Coast Greenway. I have been lucky enough to live along multiple sections of the Greenway in Washington, D.C., Maine and New Hampshire,” McDermott said. “This position is a great way to align my passion for biking and walking with a national initiative to create safe transit spaces. I look forward to learning from our partners and developing the Greenway in my home region of Northern New England.”

An active transportation advocate and GIS professional with more than 10 years of experience supporting municipal infrastructure, geospatial analysis and community engagement, McDermott brings key volunteer experience and strong local relationships to the Alliance team. He was recently named president of New Hampshire’s Seacoast Area Bicycle Riders (SABR) and has served in a leadership role with the organization since 2024. He also was named chair of the City of Dover’s Transportation Advisory Commission in January 2026.

In his role with SABR, McDermott has helped advocate for adoption of the NHDOT Complete Streets Policy, the City of Dover’s Bicycle Friendly Streetscape Guidelines and restoration of funding for the Seabrook section of the New Hampshire Seacoast Greenway — a key segment of the East Coast Greenway in New England.

“Kean’s wide-ranging volunteer and professional experiences make him an ideal addition to the Alliance team,” said National Greenway Director Allison Burson. “Thanks to his roles with Seacoast Area Bicycle Riders and other local nonprofits and municipalities in Northern New England, Kean has already worked alongside many of our important regional partners to support Greenway development. As a native of Bath, Maine, and a New Hampshire resident, Kean has incredible on-the-ground knowledge of the Greenway in Northern New England, and he is eager to deepen that knowledge with site visits with partners.”

Professionally, McDermott worked for six–plus years with the environmental engineering firm Wright-Pierce as a GIS analyst before joining the Alliance staff. In this role, he managed GIS projects supporting municipal infrastructure and utility clients throughout New England.

McDermott holds a master’s in geography and bachelor’s degrees in geography and environmental studies from George Washington University. At GW, he also worked as an academic technologist for GIS and data and technology and GIS specialist and delivered more than 175 GIS research consultations supporting faculty, staff and students.
