Fall Line Map

Why This Is A Priority

The Fall Line will form the spine of the East Coast Greenway through the Richmond metropolitan area, connecting the town of Ashland to the city of Petersburg. This 43-mile trail traverses seven localities and two planning districts in a region of 1.3 million people. When complete, the Fall Line will connect rural, suburban and urban parts of the region and link to two major regional Trails (Virginia Capital Trail, Appomattox River Trail) that form the connections to the East Coast Greenway spine and complementary routes in Virginia.

First Section Open

First major section of Fall Line opened in 2025 between Ashland and Henrico County

Henrico County Progress

Henrico County is in design and construction for multiple Fall Line sections to connect the recently opened segment to Bryan Park on the northside of the city of Richmond.

Chesterfield County in Design

The longest and most complicated section, Design Build 2 in Chesterfield County with a bridge connection to Petersburg, is fully funded and in design.

Key Connections

Connections to the Virginia Capital Trail and Appomattox River Trail are crucial for the East Coast Greenway route. The cities of Richmond and Petersburg will play a crucial role in safe and convenient connectivity between all three projects.

About the Fall Line

The Fall Line trail has 14 entities that play a leadership role in its plan, construction and its use. The Fall Line is a 43-mile long, north-south regional paved, shared use path connecting seven localities: Ashland, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg. In addition to the seven local governments, both PlanRVA and the Crater Planning District Commission are involved, and the Central Virginia Transportation Authority, and the trail is supported by the Virginia Department of Transportation as well as a nonprofit partner Sports Backers and its Friends of the Fall Line group coordinating the private support of the project.
