Greenway map of Virginia and North Carolina

Welcome to the Southeast

In the Southeast, the East Coast Greenway offers a rich mix of iconic trails, coastal beauty and vibrant communities — from favorites like the Mount Vernon Trail along the Potomac River and Virginia’s Capital Trail to North Carolina’s Research Triangle, charming coastal towns and the beaches of the Carolinas.

The Lowcountry & Beyond

The route continues through South Carolina’s Lowcountry and historic Charleston; across Georgia’s coastal counties linking inland communities with waterways, cultural sites and natural habitats; and into Florida, where contrasts abound — from sophisticated cities to wildflower meadows. While many remarkable segments are complete, significant gaps remain. The East Coast Greenway Alliance is working with partners across the region to develop the missing connections needed to create a safe, continuous route from Virginia to Florida.

Route Notice

Currently, our interim route in South Carolina and Georgia, includes a great deal of high-stress, on-road segments, predominantly on U.S. Highway 17. Our team is working with local municipalities and agencies to improve conditions in the region, but we strongly advise against riding these high-stress segments at this time. We recommend long-distance travelers focus on experiencing our beautiful, completed segments of the East Coast Greenway. The Spanish Moss Trail in Beaufort, South Carolina, and West Ashley Greenway south of Charleston are incredible sections of the trail, offering the best shorter rides in the region on the Greenway route. Those still wishing to complete long-distance rides through this region are encouraged to seek vehicle support or travel by Amtrak to bypass this stretch.
