New Jersey boasts one of the first ever trail segments designated as ECG: the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath, stretching 28 miles. A map of the designated and proposed segments of the East Coast Greenway through New Jersey is available, as is a trail guide for the D&R Trail.

A routing study for northern New Jersey has been completed through a joint effort of NJDOT and the RBA Group, an engineering firm. This extensively researched route was developed based on numerous field investigations, interviews, and meetings. The route has been mapped and now awaits implementation.
