Hillary Rodham Clinton visits the Greenway

On Monday, October 5, 1998, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton paid a visit to the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail for a short tour and to be the keynote speaker at a special event. The occasion was to announce the White House "Millennium Trails" initiative, designed to promote the development and use of off-road trails across the country.

By the year 2000, the program will announce 12 national "flagship" millennium trails, honor one state millennium trail for each state, and identify 2000 local trails.

The B&A Trail, site of the ceremony, is one of the first designated segments of the East Coast Greenway. We are proud that the B&A Trail was chosen for such an important event.

After the ceremony, Ellen Lovell, Director of the White House Millennium Council, said that the ECG is likely to become one of the 12 national flagship trails. The First Lady herself mentioned the Greenway twice during her speech.
