Welcome to the East Coast Greenway in Delaware

The Northern Delaware Greenway

The East Coast Greenway travels 40 miles through Delaware and includes 16 miles of completed trail. Travelers will breeze through the quiet, forested beauty of northern Delaware along the Northern Delaware Greenway, which leads to an on-road section through the historic suburbs of Wilmington and then into downtown. The route through downtown ends at the Christina Riverwalk, an excellent place to stop for a stroll along the river and some lunch. Leaving Wilmington on road, the next stop is historic New Castle where the Greenway meanders along the New Castle Riverfront Greenway. The route is then on roads until Newark, a small college town near the Maryland border where travelers will find themselves on the James F. Hall Trail before hitting the road again to the Maryland border.

Trail Status & Plans

In Delaware, the East Coast Greenway is being implemented through a partnership with the Delaware Department of Transportation, New Castle County, and local governments along the route. Major segments of Delaware's off-road route have been completed, and many others are in the process of being implemented in conjunction with larger transportation improvements, land use development activity, and economic development projects. Beyond our network of completed pathways and on-road routes, all Delaware buses have been equipped with bike racks to link transit with cycling facilities.
